Course in Norwegian Rules and Regulations on Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS) for Ship Masters

As required by the NMA (Norwegian Maritime Authority), masters at Norwegian flagged vessels (NOR and NIS), holding foreign certificates must complete a course in Norwegian maritime legislation. Masters on Norwegian ships who have citizenship from a country outside the EEA, must also apply for an exemption from the nationality requirement. Read more about the exemption here

For Masters, shipowners, or crew members working on a Norwegian-flagged vessel, the Norwegian Maritime Authority is the authority responsible for setting the rules one needs to follow. It helps ensure vessels operate safely, that crews are properly qualified, and that everyone’s rights and responsibilities at sea are protected. For Masters in particular, the NMA is part of everyday operations. Whether it’s signing off on a safety drill, reporting an incident, updating the logbook, or checking crew certificates, they’re expected to work in line with NMA requirements.

This online NIS course is designed to provide the participants with a comprehensive understanding of the Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS) and its regulatory framework. The participants become familiar with the NMA and the NIS flag. They will learn about relevant laws and legal provisions, as well as regulations concerning ships, cargo, passenger vessels, and seafarers. All information needed to keep people, ships, and the environment safe.

This is a mandatory course for ship masters, but all officers on Norwegian flagged vessels are required to be familiar with Norwegian legislation. The course is approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority and covers all their requirements. No prerequisites are needed and a certificate will become available for download upon completion.
