What Does a Safety Officer Do?

A Safety Officer on board a vessel has an operational HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) role, with primary responsibility for ensuring that the vessel complies with relevant regulations, internal procedures and legislation.

The responsibilities include:

  • Training crew members in procedures, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency procedures
  • Planning, conducting and documenting fire drills, evacuation drills and other emergency preparedness exercises
  • Carrying out inspections and safety rounds to check work areas, equipment, escape routes and other safety-related aspects
